Realtek RTL8111/RTL8168 Ethernet family Driver for Windows

Several Realtek wired-network products share the DEV_8168 family identity in the PCI database. Windows may show a PCIe GbE family description instead of the motherboard's marketed controller name. That is useful identification evidence but not a guarantee of exact revision or package compatibility. This page keeps those distinctions visible while directing you to official board and component support.

Compatibility confidence: Not verified

Exact driver could not be verified automatically. DrvBeacon will not guess a driver when compatibility cannot be verified. For customized audio or wireless devices, prefer the PC or motherboard maker's exact-model package. Generic Realtek support does not establish compatibility.

Identify the device in Device Manager

  1. Under Network adapters, record the Realtek Ethernet description and any Device Manager error code. Do not confuse it with a separate Realtek wireless device.
  2. Compare the complete PCI Hardware Ids, including subsystem/revision, with the exact motherboard or prebuilt PC support information.
  3. Review the official controller list and the individual package's supported Windows and architecture. Do not turn a shared family label into an exact verified match.

Hardware ID examples

  • PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168

The PCI entry includes RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 variants. This is a family resource, not a claim that the ID establishes one exact chip revision.

These public vendor/device values help identify a device family. Do not discard subsystem information when checking OEM compatibility, and do not share raw device-instance paths or private scan credentials.

Windows and architecture requirements

Check the OEM/board support page and Realtek's current Ethernet controller list for Windows 10/11 requirements. The family name does not verify all packages or Windows builds.

Use the architecture explicitly covered by the selected official package. Do not infer ARM64 support or use a 32-bit package on 64-bit Windows.

This is guidance about official resources, not verification of a particular file, release date or driver version. Check the current package notes and your PC model before any manual installation.

OEM and subsystem considerations

For onboard networking, start with the motherboard maker's exact board/revision or the PC OEM's model page. Realtek provides generic controller resources, while system support may include validated platform settings. Realtek audio and Ethernet are separate categories even when the same vendor appears in the hardware report.

Troubleshoot before changing software

After installing Windows, Code 28 on an Ethernet Controller supports checking for a missing LAN package. When Windows reports a working adapter, inspect the cable, router/switch port and network configuration first. If using another PC to obtain a package, match the target PC rather than the computer doing the search, and avoid archives or mirrors with similar filenames.

A Device Manager error code, the installed driver provider and the affected feature are better evidence than age alone. Avoid random driver sites, unofficial mirrors and driver-pack aggregators. Do not disable Windows security to run a downloaded file.

When Windows Update is appropriate

Windows Update can offer a compatible driver based on the actual PC. In Windows 11, inspect Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates. In Windows 10, optional driver updates appear under Windows Update when available. An entry must actually be applicable; this public page cannot check your PC or claim that an update is available.

DrvBeacon?s optional scanner checks the configured Windows Update source and only recommends a Windows Update action when device matching and applicability are confirmed. An offline, incomplete or policy-restricted check leaves availability unknown. No driver is installed automatically.

Related guidance and optional assistance

Find a Driver for Another PC works independently of the current computer. Not sure this is your device? Scan This PC for hardware and driver-state information, or browse another device resource. These steps are optional.
